What’s In Your Tool Box?

Posted in D.I.Y., Inspiration by Miss Circumstance on August 30, 2012

If your just gettin’ your DIY on, or think you might have the symptoms of “I can make that” disease, there are 3 Must Have tools that you’ll want to add to your repertoire, or take out of the deep of your garage and polish them up to get them ready for a lot of use. I use these all-the-live-long-day. I’m surprised they haven’t broken by now.

Staple Gun– A must for re-covering any furniture in fabric. I used this for my DIY headboard, to recover a basic cork bulletin in linen, to recover seat cushions in new fabric…I staple fabric to stuff all the time. Just like most things, these run anywhere from $15 up to hundreds for the crazy industrial ones. All you need to start out with is your standard heavy duty staple gun- cost around $20. One day I’d like to have a powered industrial style one like you see them using on design shows when they reupholster stuff. Then I’d turn from a poser to legit. Like Pinocchio when he turned into a real boy. Like Keisha versus Lady Gaga.

Hot Glue Gun– Well, obviously you glue stuff with this, but it is really a way to add detail and personalization to things. I use it often to glue trim to curtains panels (I used it on my DIY roman shade), and I think it’s one of the best things to use to re-cover lampshades. The glue heats up fast, dries fast, and holds well. Also super cheap at under 20 bucks.

Sander-Any time you paint old or used furniture (hello Goodwill finds), you have to lightly sand the piece for the primer to adhere. It won’t get into little spaces or tiny corners, but it will speed up the overall process a ton. Building shelves? You’ll want to sand the edges and corners to smooth any rough spots or sharp corners. You can get a decent sander for under $40.

These 3 tools are a great base for all you budding DIYers out there!

Pink: Get Some!

Posted in Decor Files, Inspiration, Pomp's Home by Miss Pomp on August 21, 2012

Here’s the deal peeps: I need more pink in my life. I’ve been feeling this way for a while and I’ve decided, the time is now.

I’ve been spending some time poking around the internet, mostly on Pinterest, and have been checking out everything from hot pink couches to simpler (and cheaper…and less permanent) items like throw pillows and blankets.

Here are some of my favorites:

I need some votes people…I’m majorly considering a pink linen couch (Don’t tell my husband), what do you think?

A Tore-Up House….

Posted in Circumstance's Home, D.I.Y., Decor Files by Miss Circumstance on August 20, 2012

…that’s what I’ve got. My boys have been excited to share a room once my youngest started kindergarten, so we started switching things around. No big right? Well somehow this presto change-o has spilled into all crevices of our house. For starters, if one switches rooms, one must paint- right? So we painted. Only the first color I picked turned out like mint green on radioactive steroids, so we had to repaint it. So that was a pain. I had started building a driftwood table that I was going to use outside, but then decided to use it as an extra long bedside table that would go in between the boys beds. So I had to add a longer top to that (DIY tutorial to follow soon). Here are some the things tinkering around in my head-

Yes it’s true. My name is Miss Circumstance, and I make things more complicated than they need to be. I can’t just switch beds into a room. I must change the blinds, the curtain rods, the paint, and the chair. Don’t judge me.

Snap Shots- SheShe Shoes

This Los Gatos Shoe store’s jewelry is what caught my eye. I’m a sucker for big cocktail rings, and these pieces had all the right colors of pale mint and coral.

There’s been a flurry of activity around here which has included painting (then painting again. More on that later), driftwood table making, DIY curtain rod, customizing woven shades…just you wait ‘enry ‘iggins, just you wait.

A Broad Abroad: London! Portobello Road Image Diary

Posted in A Broad Abroad, Inspiration by Miss Pomp on August 14, 2012

One of my absolute favorite places we visited was London. It was rainy and cold, and I wore my rain boots and trench coat every day, and absolutely had the time of my life, despite the 12 coffees I had to get each day just to keep my body temperature from falling to dangerously low…well…lows.

This particular rainy day, we ventured to the Portobello Road Market, and wandered the streets for hours checking out all the fun antiques and other fun not-so-antique-y items.

Here’s a couple of the things that made my day.

Awesome leather bag.

Rad guy who designed awesome leather bag…And husbands thumb.

Cool shelving in All Saints

All Saints decor – Wall of antique sewing machines

Fresh made crepes with Nutella – YUM

Ooo La Rue

Posted in Decor Files by Miss Circumstance on August 10, 2012

These are two pictures I pulled from the latest issue of Rue Magazine. The first one is a room I surprisingly like. I’m pretty impressed with how they made some ugly rock columns work. It’s super cozy and has some great and interesting layering happening, and many many textures. I don’t know if I would want a room like that in my house- it’s all a bit brown for me, but I would like to visit and lay in it from time to time.

The second one I think is soooo lovely. I love the oversized gold curtain holdbacks used as wall hooks. Does one actually own that many scarfs? I guess that one does. But I have purses and handbags (actually. I don’t really have “handbags”. That implies having the time and the care to actually switch the contents of my big ol’ purse to a different “handbag” that goes with my outfit. That’s never happened). That lady has some great shoes though.

Could It Be The Perfect Shelf?

Posted in D.I.Y., Decor Files by Miss Circumstance on August 8, 2012

I am in love with these. It has DIY written all over it. These would be so awesome in a kids room, in a living room, in an office, in a kitchen…..you get the idea. I love the combination of textures and the I-aint-no-holla-back-4-sides-of-laminate-boring-book-shelf. The haters will tell me “Um, lady, it’s rope and jacked up wood hung up with construction worker Timberland Boot industrial metal.” Exactly.
