DIY Hallway Makeover

Posted in D.I.Y., Decor Files, P&C Portfolio by Miss Circumstance on September 12, 2012

Have you noticed all the end-cap-of-hallways makeovers around in various catalogs, shelter magazines, and blogs? One of the first ones I remember noticing and thinking “wow, that is so simple but so impactful I’m so doing that – shoot I don’t have an end-of-hallway – I’m doing it somewhere else” is this one from the West Elm catalog-

I worked on this awhile back for a client, who didn’t have enough space to add furniture, but we still wanted to make it a “moment” (blech).

Two simple elements but we were so happy with how it came out. The wallpaper was DIYed with grasscloth and a stencil (more details here), and the mirror was from a local antique mall. Because the wallpaper texture was dull and the pattern large and geometric, I wanted a mirror that had that gilded vintage look and I was hoping to find a round one since the wall was rectangle. Duh. I wish the mirror was a tad bigger to balance out the scale a bit, but it was so perfect in every other way it won the contest. And it actually looks bigger in person.

So don’t ignore those end-of-hallways-why-dont-they-have-an-actual-name people. They can be so fun!

Faux Jeffries

I love this gorgeous wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries…too bad it’s a bajillion dollars a roll. I attempted to re-create it today for a client using this grasscloth wallpaper from Design Your Wall

and this stencil from Cutting Edge Stencil

In order to re-create it I had to go into the local Bermuda Triangle that is Home Depot. Good gawl I don’t  like that place…it is a black hole of time. A total time suck. Scientists should study it as some kind of real life time warp. Every time I swear, “there is now way this will take longer than ten minutes…”, and an hour and a half later I emerge dazed and confused, shielding my eyes from that big bright thing in the sky, wondering where it has been all my life.

But, I have to say I am pretty much in love with how it came out. Pictures to follow soon…

Whaaaaat??? Wallpaper in a laundry room???? Yes please…

Check out this beauty of a before and after via Design Sponge. Doesn’t it just make you want to do laundry in there? Love the idea of a table top like that over the top, and the idea of not forgetting about the under-dog misfit rooms like mud rooms, laundry rooms, and garages. Which, lets face it, most of our “laundry rooms” are in a tiny corner of our garage shoved in with a bunch of pipes and water heater shenanigans. But, I think you can totally do something like this in a part of your garage. All the more reason too actually.

Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend

Look at this great DIY entryway courtesy of Jennifer at Fric and Frac via Design*Sponge. Things like this are so great for small entry ways or apartments. It is a big impact that just needs a couple little touches to look complete (like she did with the little yellow table, large blue vase, and glossy white mirror). Notice the scale of the items too – the mirror is big and the vase big. Large objects help make the space feel grand.

Strokes Of Genius…

Ready for an awesome idea? This one I found when I was thumbing through House Beautiful. This is the office of designer Melissa Warner. She took the mirrored closet doors and TURNED THEM AROUND and put them back on their tracks, and wallpapered the back side!! Brilliant! I never thought of turning mirrored closet doors around – perfect for the renter who needs to un-do some of their doing when they go. I loooooove this wallpaper too (Osborne & Little Hothouse in Arizona)

Number Lovin’…

I saved this picture a few days ago (I can’t remember the source, so if this belongs to you please let me know and I can credit you). Although it is a little to dark in tone for my taste, there are a couple things that I love:

1) I love using wallpaper on walls like they did where the fireplace is. For walls that  either pop out or recess in certain places, or are kind of standing alone in some way, wallpaper is a great way to capitalize on that and give it some definition.

2) I love the artwork above the fireplace, and it is one of those things that would be easy to do yourself. With just some black paint from the art supply store, and a yard of canvas from the fabric store, you could paint something pretty darn similar to it. You could then either pop it in a frame or stretch your own canvas. If you wanted to be precise with the number (or you could do a letter), you could print one out from the computer and lightly trace around it.
