Pomp And Circumstance

A Broad Abroad: Rome – Trastevere

Posted in A Broad Abroad, Fashion Files, Inspiration, Pomp Day-By-Day, Uncategorized by Miss Pomp on January 8, 2013

Our last stop on #HashtagEuro2012 was Rome. Lucky for us we met a lovely girl in Positano who had studied abroad in Rome for a few years, and was kind enough to shoot us an email with tips about her favorite spots in Rome. Let me tell you, suckers, having someone who actually lived in the place you’re going telling you where to eat and spend time makes all the difference in the world. I’m talking “We didn’t like it at all” to “It was one of our favorite stops” difference. We only had two full days in Rome, so we made our time count while we were there. Night one, after we arrived and checked in, we headed out on a 45 minute-ish walk through the city to Trastevere for a late dinner.  Inhabited since 700BC-ish, the area has maintained it’s charm and character amazingly well. Cobblestone streets and tiny restaurants tucked into nooks and crannies. You have no idea how fun this is to write, it’s like reliving it. But for free this time.

Three Nights – Three Christmas Parties: Part 2

On Saturday night husby and I attended the Wylie Weddings  1-year anniversary party with our fabulous friends Amy and Cole. Check out the Wylie Weddings Website…they’re awesome. And yes, that’s husby and I on the front page…BAM!  Totes famous, people!

The party was at Bocci Cellar in Downtown Santa Cruz…the type of dive-bar that the same 15 guys from the neighborhood hang out at EVERY DAY for the entire year….needless to say, I felt slightly out of place when we walked in and all 15 said-men in plaid shirts got suddenly silent and stared at us as we walked to the back patio. The back patio was AWESOME.  It was covered and heated (thank the Lord), and has two bocce courts to play on for free all the time. Bocce Ball? Yes please. I LOVE bocce…or anything else competitive for that matter.

Thank you Katie for a very FUN evening!

I love the details on this dress, the fabric is so beautiful, and oddly enough, totally sturdy. I know that’s a weird way to describe lace, but that’s how it feels – sturdy.

In other news, I don’t know how to dress for winter. I think it stems from my allergy to wool (like, I’m actually break-out-in-hives-allergic, not like, “oh, I don’t like it cause it’s itchy”-allergic). Everything beautiful and cozy and warm and lovely is wool in wintertime…. And so I’m still trying to figure out how to wear things I love, and stay current, without being a giant walking ball of hives all the time.

I’ll let you know if I come up with a plan.

P.S. – You can get a sneak peek of my new light fixture in the background of the first photo…It is AWESOME. Get excited people, get REALLY excited.

If You Follow The Gray Stone Path

I refer to this jacket as my “Hawaii 5-0 jacket”. It’s silky and white, and perfectly suited for summertime.  “Too bad for you” says the weather, “I’m going to rain on you while you walk to work”.

Layering is the only way I don’t get hypothermia during the winter months. I only ever want to wear shorts, and breezy tops….so I layer, and add a cozy warm scarf and tights to every outfit, and thus don’t freeze to death.

I’m counting down to spring time.

Channelling some sort of lion-like hairstyle last week… If I’m honest, I just don’t like to brush my hair – so I don’t do it very often…although I have started to brush it more at the behest of my hair stylist, who, at my last hair trim informed me that my hair looked like that of a barbie doll who had been played with too much and not groomed enough. YIKES!  (I promise I’ve been taking better care of my mane, Tami!).

On another note, I got TONS of compliments on this shirt…one person in particular told me several times throughout the day that it was very slimming. Go figure – the cheapest things are the ones people notice! Shirt – Forever 21 – $12.

I’ve been slightly under the weather the last few days…well, that’s an understatement. I’ve felt downright poopy. That being said, these pictures were obviously taken a while ago, when I was feeling over the weather 🙂 (Get it? Nudge, nudge).

Anywho, I’ve been getting a lot of use out of this new jacket from Urban. A little too much use actually…I only had it for about 2 weeks before it was off to the cleaners.

Trying to decide what pieces to supplement my closet with for the upcoming season….

What I would wear if I was attending a music festival…Also known as what I wore today. Apparently I’m pretending it hasn’t been foggy for the last 7 days straight. Here’s to hoping the sun comes out to play!

Last week, I posted some gorgeous photos of the one and only Ms. Zooey Deschanel. (You can view the post here).  Toward the end of said post, I made note of the great boho headband she was wearing across her forehead.  And I quote:

“The boho headband.  In my opinion, it’s slightly tough to get this look right, but I’m gonna try it anyway!”

Low and behold!  I have tried it!  Check it out….

(Tank – Anthropologie, Shorts – J. Crew, Tights – Old, Boots – Frye, Necklace – Marc By Marc Jacobs, Sunglasses – Ray Ban, Rings – Elizabeth and James, Dannijo, and F21)

What do you guys think?  Have you tried the boho headband?  Thoughts? Musings?

Leather and Stripes and Lace, Oh My!

It seems that lately each time I am just about finished putting on an outfit in the morning I go through the following debate:

To belt, or not to belt…That is the question.

While I definitely appreciate the figure flattering quality of adding belts to just about any outfit (and on this particular day I went with a belt), the closer it gets to Summer, the more I just want to wear cosy, flowy pieces!

(Dress – H&M, Tank – Anthropologie, Jacket – Purchased at Ambiance in the Capitola Mall, Belt – Urban Outfitters, Socks – Marc By Marc Jacobs, Boots – Frye, Rings – Elizabeth and James, Dannijo, and F21)

So, what do you think? To belt, or not to belt?
